Union's Thomas, Webster's Ellis both join 1,000 point club on Friday

The 1,000 point club: a stature that many players aspire for but few actually reach. The Sixth District had two players achieve this remarkable feat on the exact same day. Union County senior Logan Thomas and Webster County senior Chatman Ellis both broke into the record books in their respective games on Friday. Thomas scored 24 in Union's 69-52 loss to Anna-Jonesboro in the Eldorado Holiday Tournament on Friday afternoon, and the Braves' veteran continues to quietly be one of western Kentucky's best post players. Photo courtesy of The Gleaner  Thomas began playing his freshman season, but only scored six points in his debut year. He amped up the scoring in his sophomore season, pouring in a total of 341 points on the year, and Thomas scored 413 points last year in his junior season. The Braves' dynamic big man has scored 243 points so far on the season. The standout senior is also a menace on the boards--a threat to grab double digits in rebounds nearly every

Webster's Keeney breaks 1,000 point milestone

It's no secret that Webster County junior Karlie Keeney has talent on the softball diamond, committing to Liberty University to play softball this past fall. But the multi-sport talent also excels on the basketball hardwood, and Keeney broke into the record books and wrote her name into the elite 1,000 point club with a nine-point performance against Dickson County (TN) on Thursday evening. Photo courtesy of the Henderson Gleaner Keeney has been playing with the Lady Trojans with seventh grade, and she began starting for Webster County her freshman year. The Lady Trojan sharpshooter has netted 178-of-468 attempts from three-point land since her eighth grade year, and Keeney broke Kelly Pendleton's single-game three-point record by nailing nine trifectas against Livingston Central at home on Feb. 13 of last season. Keeney and her Lady Trojan teammates currently stand at a region-best 12-4 on the season, and Webster County will enjoy eight out of its final 13 games at sh

Girls basketball power rankings: Week Four

1. Webster County Lady Trojans (11-3)   The Lady Trojans have certainly responded after suffering a 47-45 setback to Evansville Memorial that dropped them to 4-3 on season. Webster County has won seven straight games--a stretch that included an Owensboro Invitational Tournament title and victories over Region Three powerhouse Owensboro Catholic and defending Region Two champion and rival Henderson County. Senior Jessica Winders has been playing like the dominant post player that she needs to be as of late, and the Lady Trojans appear as the top dog in the region going into Sixth District play next week.  2. Christian County Lady Colonels (10-2)  The Lady Colonels have had a solid season so far, racing out to a 10-2 record behind the play of standout senior Trinitee Jackson (15.9 PPG, 10.6 RPG). But unlike Webster County, Christian has not yet been tested with any marquee opponents like Murray, Graves County or Owensboro Catholic. The Lady Colonels will face off against tw

Detorrian Ware continues to be Kentucky's most underestimated player

Image
Christian County senior Detorrian Ware is putting up crazy good numbers for the Colonels, scoring an average of 33.6 points per night to complement a 8.8 rebounds per game statistic. The Colonel standout is also shooting a blazing 47.1 percent from long range on the year. But I still do not think Ware has been given his full due just yet. Photo provided by nextuprecruits.cpm Even though he is one of the state's most dangerous scorers, people still underestimate just how good he is since he has lost the weight (an estimate of anywhere from 35-45 pounds). Last year Ware hurt you primarily by doing two things: shooting 3-pointers and crashing the offensive glass hard for putbacks. That was the essence of his game. But the weight loss has totally transformed his cage skills from good to SCARY good. I'm not talking just Division One good....I'm talking POWER SIX good--a feat that has not been accomplished since former Colonel Anthony Hickey went on to play for LSU and l

1. Christian County Colonels (8-1)   After suffering a 39-point setback to Owensboro back on Dec. 12, Christian County has responded with a very nice five-game winning streak. The Colonels won the Webster County Baptist Health Sports and Rehab Classic by sweeping Louisville Western, host Webster County and Todd County Central. Senior standout Detorrian Ware showed why he is the one of the state's top scorers by pouring in a career-high 49 points against Western on Thursday night, and the Colonels have plenty of momentum going into the Poplar Bluff Showdown in Missouri. 2. Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons (9-3) Outside of a loss to Webster County on Dec. 9, the Maroons have been consistently good and currently have the most wins in the region. The one-two punch of big man Ksuan Casey and junior sharpshooter Cade Cunningham is something that prevents as a formidable challenge for any opponent that North faces. The Maroons will spend the next few days in Lexin
